International Irish Whiskey Day: Athrú X 3

We are looking forward to celebrating International Irish Whiskey Day on Thursday, March 3rd (03/03).

This celebration gives us the perfect opportunity to explain the importance of the number three to us here at Athrú Whiskey.

International Irish Whiskey Day

Now more than a decade old, International Irish Whiskey Day is an annual worldwide celebration of Ireland’s greatest alcoholic spirit. March 3rd was specifically chosen as the perfect date for International Irish Whiskey Day for a number of reasons.

As you probably know, there are three established styles of Irish Whiskey: Single Grain, Single Malt and Single Pot Still. It’s also well-known that Irish Whiskey must be matured for at least three years before it can be called whiskey. Then, of course, there is the fact that traditional Irish Whiskey must be triple distilled. Scotch, on the other hand, has traditionally been distilled only twice.

Finally, the Irish tricolour flag also shows the huge significance in Ireland of the number three.

CELTIC SYMBOLISM AND THE NUMBER THREE

In Celtic culture and mythology three is also an especially important number. The most obvious Irish example is the national Irish emblem of the shamrock, which is a three-leafed plant.

However, there is also the triple aspect (trinity) of ancient gods and goddesses and the ancient triple spiral symbol, known as the triskel.

Athrú And The Number Three.

Here at Lough Gill Distillery the number three also has its own special significance.

Our original vision for Athrú was for a series of whiskies that would be fitting of the top shelf of a collection, which a collector could use to do any manner of whiskey tastings.

Hence the reason why each of our whiskies is finished in a different wood, such that they all have a slightly different flavour profile.

Athrú Trilogies

It is no coincidence that we launched Athrú with the Creation Trilogy of Annacoona, Knocknarea, and Keshcorran. Watch this space for some exciting news about other upcoming release announcements.

The number three ties so many of the key elements of Athrú together for us; this key connection in Celtic symbolism, our single malt triple distillation and how our Athrú logo is divided into three “slices” representing the three stills (bet you didn’t know that?).

So with all of those trilogy connections, we felt this was an opportune time to celebrate the International Irish Whiskey Day, this March 3rd.

We hope you get to celebrate with a special dram (or three) of your favourite Athrú.
